POSITION TITLE:      Payroll Manager

REPORTS TO:            Director of HR Operations

FLSA:                          Exempt




The Payroll Manager is responsible for payroll processing and oversight of payroll. This includes managing and streamlining processes, creating policy and procedure, and processing timely and accurate payroll.


The deliverables for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Processing timely and accurate payrolls.Works with outsourced payroll providers to ensure that checks are cut on time and are accurate. Combines data from the point of sale system, time clock, and HRIS to process pay.
  • Ensures compliance. Works with payroll/HR providers to ensure that taxes are compliant and accurate. Processes checks for terminated staff within required state timelines.  Works with HR to ensure compliance for minimum wage, appropriate deductions, and other related labor laws.
  • Streamlines processes and creates policy. Leads efforts to streamline payroll-related processes. Partners with the Director of HR Operations to create efficient policies and procedures regarding all pay-related processes within the organization.
  • Manages Payroll Specialist. Supervises and manages Payroll Specialist. This includes building and developing a high-performing team payroll team. Works in coordination with other HR partners including HR Business Partners, Benefits, HR Coordinators, and HRIS.



The qualifications for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, v-look ups, and formulas.
  • 3-5 years' experience in Payroll
  • Bachelor's degree or applicable work experience preferred


  • Finger Dexterity: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  • Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents, products, or machinery.
  • Physical Strength: Non-Sedentary work; standing and walking most of the time. Stands, sits, lifts and bends intermittently throughout the day. Temperature variations can occur. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Attendance is an essential duty of the position. Employees must work regularly scheduled shifts, during business hours.



  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.  Able to interpret various instructions.
  • Mathematics Ability: Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages, and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.  Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.  Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent); and variation in word order using present, perfect, and future tenses.


Primary work in a fitness facility and office setting. Temperature variations can occur.  The environment includes some ambient noise such as talking and use of gym equipment and machinery.
